What is the internet?

Nowadays the internet has became a crucial “part” of our life, but let’s imagine that somebody that doesn’t know what the internet is, would come to us for an explanation. What would you do? How would you explain the internet?

If I was in this situation I would start with this definition written by John Cowperwait and Simon Flynn in “The Internet for A to Z” that sounds like this: “…The Internet is primarily a new media space : a means of publishing and presenting information – about people, products, services, international affairs, hobbies, science and technology, the arts, pets, celebrities and so on. Anything and everything.” (Cowpertwait, Flynn 2001:17) .The internet is the new medium, the modern source of information. The internet gives you the advantage to transfer large amount of data fast and wireless. This thing wasn’t possible 30 years ago. Slowly, the old media like the newspapers and radio is being replaced by the internet.

The web gives you the power to affirm yourself and this is just two clicks away, you can tell your opinion on anything at any time, create a blog, write an article and even comment on others articles and opinion. “The Web combines the worlds of desktop publishing with an international network, broadening access to anyone with a computer and a modem connection. With access to the Net, everyone has the opportunity to become a publisher.”(Cowpertwait, Flynn 2001:18)

On the other hand the internet doesn’t have only good sides , it is also full of pornography, propaganda, offensive videos and racism, and this is because of it’s freedom. But all these mean things can be avoided if you only do what you wanted to do, and only explore your interest.

All in all the internet today is an evolving medium that informs and entertain us or sometimes can even frustrate us.
